Movement Madness

As part of our learning in Health and Physical Education, we have been working on developing motor skills, knowledge and understanding about movement and building positive attitudes towards physical activity. Through learning and by accepting challenges in health-related and movement contexts children reflect on the nature of well-being, perseverance and enhance their interactions with others.

The students learning involved:

  • Movement and balancing skills

  • Throwing and catching skills

  • Stretching exercises

  • Building stamina for long distance running through training

  • Learning to maintain a consistent pace throughout their run

We were lucky enough to have Jo from Taupo Netball come to visit Room 15.  She introduced the sport of netball to our class. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and ball skills which are required to play the sport of netball in the future.

  • We had to stretch our warm-up and stretch our bodies

  • Developed our movement skills by hopping, jumping, skipping etc and our balance skills by touching different parts of our bodies - elbows, backs, ankle/arm

  • Jo talked to us about the important things we needed to remember when throwing or catching a netball.  She showed us how make a great chest pass.

  • Finally the real test shooting a netball in to a goal (for us this consisted of a hoop at a more appropriate height.

Prior to our training for cross country we read the story “The cross country race - By Jenny Giles. The book provided us with lots of valuable information about our training for our school cross country. Things like the importance of the warm up to stretch our bodies, training every day to build stamina, the starting announcement, supporting others when they get hurt, being a good friend and that winning is not everything. Trying your best and supporting/encouraging others is the key. The children in Room 15 have also been building their stamina and perseverance through our training for cross country. An essential part of learning in this sport is thinking about pace - not starting out too fast and maintaining a pace/speed you can hold for the whole race. Unfortunately, our initial day for the event was postponed due to the rainy weather. However, the following Tuesday morning was sunny and clear,

  1. We travelled on the bus with Room 10 & 14 to Spa Park.

I liked running and sliding down the hill at cross country (Annabelle)

I found it hard because the pollen was making it hard to breathe. I think I could have been faster (Hector)
