Karapiti, 2025 Term Three
Making a Mark
The Term 3 inquiry, Making a Mark, will use the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum to explore how migration has shaped New Zealand’s past and present. Students will learn about different waves of migration, beginning with early Polynesian settlers, then moving toward European settlement and more recent arrivals from around the world. This will include studying individuals and groups who have made a significant impact on New Zealand through their actions, contributions, and stories. As part of this learning, students will also be developing their persuasive writing skills, learning how to use language effectively to convince others of their point of view, tying into their research and reflections on the impact of migration.
BSLA Structured Literacy
Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) is a structured literacy approach. BSLA teaches students the literacy concepts that help them learn to read, write, and spell effectively. In the Year 5 and 6 space, this approach supports students to strengthen their vocabulary, spelling patterns, and understanding of how words and language work. Alongside this explicit teaching approach, students build fluency and confidence in both reading and writing. Karapiti teachers have been attending professional development courses to deepen their understanding of BSLA and have started implementation.
Sports
Cross country training will take place during class time (as a part of our daily fitness), with the school cross country event scheduled for Wednesday August 13, 2025. Students who perform well will qualify to represent the school at the inter-school cross country competition.
